Coal Ministry to Launch Digital Exploration Module on July 4 to Boost Transparency and Efficiency

In a significant move toward modernising India’s coal sector, the Ministry of Coal is set to launch a Digital Exploration Module on July 4, 2025. This new initiative, designed to enhance transparency and streamline coal block exploration, will be made available through the Single Window Clearance System (SWCS) web portal.

The digital module is being developed in partnership with the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL)—a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd., and the nation’s premier exploration and consultancy agency for coal and lignite.

What Is the Digital Exploration Module?

The module will serve as a centralised, digital repository and interface for managing coal block exploration activities across the country. It is designed to enable faster decision-making, reduce bureaucratic delays, and offer real-time tracking of block exploration progress, data submissions, and approvals.

According to officials from the Ministry, the platform will help both government and private players in uploading, monitoring, and accessing geological reports, exploration progress, and related documentation for coal blocks allocated for commercial mining.

Role of CMPDIL

CMPDIL has played a pivotal role in conceptualising and technically supporting the development of the module. With decades of expertise in coal sector planning and exploration, CMPDIL has ensured that the platform incorporates advanced mapping tools, data security protocols, and seamless integration with other coal ministry applications.

Integration with SWCS Portal

The digital exploration module is being launched under the broader framework of the Single Window Clearance System (SWCS)—an online platform initiated by the Ministry of Coal to streamline the statutory clearances and approvals required for coal mine development.

By integrating the exploration module into SWCS, the government aims to ensure complete transparency in the pre-mining phase and lay the groundwork for better resource management, environmental compliance, and project accountability.

Objectives and Expected Impact

  • Ease of Doing Business: Simplifies the documentation and approval process for companies involved in coal exploration.

  • Transparency: Ensures all stakeholders, including state governments and investors, have access to updated exploration data.

  • Speed: Reduces the time taken from block identification to resource estimation and commercial readiness.

  • Data Standardisation: Facilitates uniform reporting formats and centralized records for all ongoing and future coal exploration activities.

The launch of the digital exploration module marks a critical step in the Coal Ministry’s ongoing efforts to digitise and modernise India’s coal sector. With growing emphasis on efficient resource use, faster approvals, and environmental accountability, such digital initiatives are expected to play a transformative role in the future of India’s energy and mining sectors.
