OMC Shines at 42nd Annual Mines Safety Week Celebration 2024

The Odisha Mining Corporation Limited (OMC) has once again demonstrated its commitment to fostering a safety-first culture, earning prestigious accolades at the 42nd Annual Mines Safety Week Celebration 2024. Organized under the aegis of the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), Bhubaneswar Region, the event highlighted the exemplary safety standards maintained by OMC’s mines, reinforcing its position as a leader in the Indian mining industry. This year’s celebration, held in Barbil, Odisha, underscored the theme “Viksit Khadan, Viksit Bharat” (Developed Mines, Developed India), emphasizing the pivotal role of safe mining practices in contributing to national progress.

A Legacy of Safety Excellence

The Annual Mines Safety Week Celebration, a tradition spanning over five decades, is a cornerstone initiative by the DGMS, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. Since its inception in 1978 in the Bhubaneswar Region, the event has been a platform to promote safety awareness, reduce mine-related accidents, and encourage sustainable mining practices. The Odisha Metalliferous Mines Safety Week Celebration Committee (AMSWCC), guided by the Directorate of Mines Safety (DMS), Bhubaneswar Region, orchestrates this event with meticulous planning, involving sub-committees for finance, souvenirs, and plaques to ensure a seamless execution.

The 42nd edition, culminating on July 13, 2024, saw participation from 113 metalliferous mines across India, including prominent names like OMC, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel, SAIL, Vedanta, and AM/NS India. The event featured a series of competitions evaluating mines across categories such as General Working, Mechanical Maintenance, Electrical Maintenance, Drilling, Safety & Statutory Compliance, Training, Health & Welfare, Emergency Preparedness, Mock Drills & Accident Statistics, Innovation & Digitisation, Publicity & Propaganda, and First Aid. These evaluations underscore the comprehensive approach to safety that OMC has consistently championed.

OMC’s Stellar Performance

OMC’s mines, including Khandbandh Iron Ore Mine, Banspani Iron Ore Mines, Tiringpahar Iron Ore Mines, Roida-C Iron & Manganese Mines, Gandhamardan Iron Ore Mines (Block A and B), and Sukrangi Chromite Mines, were recognized for their outstanding adherence to safety protocols. The awards received by OMC reflect its unwavering dedication to ensuring a secure working environment for its workforce, aligning with the DGMS’s mission to propagate safe mining practices. A post on X by @odisha_mining on July 15, 2025, proudly announced, “Mines of OMC have been awarded at the 42nd Annual Mines Safety Week Celebration 2024 under the aegis of DGMS Bhubaneswar. #OMC continues to lead with a safety-first culture across its operations.”

The final day of the celebration, hosted by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) in Barbil, was marked by significant events, including the hoisting of the safety flag and the release of balloons bearing safety messages by Chief Guest Shri Awanish Kumar Mishra, Director of Mines Safety, Bhubaneswar Region 1. The event also featured exhibition stalls by various mining companies, showcasing innovative safety equipment and protocols, and the unveiling of a digital souvenir to commemorate the occasion.

OMC: A Pillar of Odisha’s Mining Sector

Incorporated in 1956, OMC has grown from a joint venture between the Government of Odisha and the Government of India into a wholly state-owned corporation since 1961. Today, it stands as one of India’s largest mining companies, extracting major minerals like chrome, iron, manganese, and bauxite to cater to industries such as steel, aluminum, sponge iron, pig iron, ferro-manganese, and ferro-chrome. OMC’s classification as a “Gold” Category State PSU and its status as a 100% debt-free, profit-making corporation highlight its robust management and operational excellence.

Beyond its commercial achievements, OMC is renowned for its corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability practices, earning national recognition for its contributions. Its focus on safety is integral to its operational ethos, ensuring the well-being of its workforce and the communities surrounding its mining operations. The awards at the 42nd Annual Mines Safety Week are a testament to OMC’s holistic approach, balancing productivity with stringent safety measures.

The Broader Impact of Mines Safety Week

The Mines Safety Week serves as a critical platform for fostering a culture of safety across India’s mining sector. By recognizing exemplary performances, the DGMS encourages mine operators to prioritize safety, reducing workplace accidents and promoting sustainable practices. The event’s structure, including central-level trade tests, inaugural functions, and concluding ceremonies, ensures comprehensive engagement with all stakeholders.

This year’s theme, “Viksit Khadan, Viksit Bharat,” resonates with India’s broader vision of development through sustainable and safe industrial practices. OMC’s achievements at the event align with this vision, showcasing how responsible mining can contribute to national growth while safeguarding human lives and the environment.

Looking Ahead

As OMC continues to lead by example, its success at the 42nd Annual Mines Safety Week Celebration 2024 sets a high standard for the mining industry. The corporation’s commitment to zero harm, as echoed in its safety-first culture, is a model for others to emulate. With upcoming events like the Odisha Mining & Infrastructure International Expo in January 2026, OMC is poised to further showcase its advancements in safety, technology, and sustainability on a global stage.

OMC’s accolades at the 42nd Annual Mines Safety Week Celebration 2024 reflect its enduring commitment to safety, innovation, and excellence. As it continues to harness Odisha’s mineral wealth, OMC remains a beacon of responsible mining, contributing to a safer and more prosperous India.
