Coal Ministry to Launch 14th Mine Auction, Unveil Digital Portals to Boost Transparency and Efficiency

The Ministry of Coal on Tuesday announced plans to launch the 14th round of commercial coal mine auctions, aimed at expanding domestic coal production and reducing import dependence. Alongside the auction, the ministry will also unveil a series of new digital portals designed to streamline the bidding process, enhance transparency, and improve stakeholder engagement.

According to an official statement, the upcoming auction will feature a mix of fully explored and partially explored coal blocks across several coal-bearing states, including Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. The initiative is expected to attract significant participation from both public and private sector players, continuing the government’s momentum in commercial coal mining reforms.

Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy said the 14th round of auctions would mark another milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance in coal production. “Our goal is to make India a global leader in responsible and technology-driven mining. The introduction of digital platforms will make every stage of the process faster, transparent, and investor-friendly,” he stated.

The ministry’s new digital portals will include modules for real-time data access, bidder registration, document submission, performance tracking, and online grievance redressal. These tools are part of the government’s broader strategy to digitize the coal value chain and ensure a more efficient and accountable ecosystem.

Since the launch of commercial coal mining in 2020, the ministry has successfully auctioned over 100 coal blocks, significantly increasing private sector participation. The 14th round is expected to add further momentum to this trend, potentially boosting domestic production capacity and employment generation in the sector.

Industry experts have welcomed the move, noting that a transparent and digital-first approach could attract new-age investors and facilitate technology integration in India’s coal mining landscape.
