Multiple Casualties Feared as Stone Mine Collapses in Sonbhadra, Massive Rescue Under Way

Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh — A major tragedy struck the Billi Markundi mining belt of Sonbhadra district after a section of a stone quarry collapsed during drilling operations. The incident, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, has so far claimed at least four lives, while several more workers are feared trapped beneath huge slabs of stone.

How the Collapse Happened

Early investigations indicate that workers were drilling holes for blasting when a large portion of the quarry wall suddenly gave way. Massive stone boulders slid down, trapping the labourers working below. Eyewitnesses said the collapse happened “within seconds,” giving workers little time to react or escape.

The quarry is reportedly operated by Krishna Mining Works, and the sudden landslide raised immediate concerns about safety lapses at the site.

Rescue Operation Intensifies

A large-scale rescue operation has been launched involving:

  • NDRF and SDRF teams

  • Local police and fire personnel

  • Heavy earth-moving machines

  • Technical experts from a private cement and mining firm

Rescue officials said the operation is complex due to the size of the fallen boulders, each weighing several tons. The unstable terrain and fear of further slide are slowing down the progress.

Officials estimate that up to 15 workers may still be trapped under the rubble.

Rising Death Toll and Identification

The death toll, which initially stood at one, rose to four as more bodies were recovered during the rescue. Among the deceased, two have been identified:

  • Raju Singh (30), resident of Panari village

  • Indrajit (30), also from Panari

Two other bodies recovered are yet to be identified. Families of several missing workers remain at the site, anxiously waiting for updates.

Negligence Allegations & FIR Registered

Local residents and families of the trapped workers have accused the mine operators of gross negligence. They allege:

  • Workers had no safety gear

  • Drilling continued despite warnings of unstable rock layers

  • The quarry may have been functioning despite order for a temporary halt

Police have registered an FIR against the mine owner and two partners of the quarry on charges of negligence and endangering lives.

Government & Administrative Response

Senior officials, including the ADG (Varanasi Zone) and district authorities, are overseeing the rescue. The Minister of State for Forest and Environment, Sanjeev Gond, visited the site and expressed concern over how mining operations continued despite reported safety alerts.

He also signalled strict action against any collusion between officials and illegal mining networks.

Authorities have assured:

  • A full investigation

  • Strict accountability

  • Compensation for the affected families

Challenges Facing Rescuers

The rescue teams face multiple difficulties:

  • Extremely heavy boulders blocking access

  • Risk of secondary collapse

  • Night-time operations complicated by darkness

  • Narrow approach routes for machinery

Despite these hurdles, teams are working continuously, with hydraulic cutters, drilling machines, and cranes deployed to lift the rock slabs.

A Spotlight on Mining Safety

The Sonbhadra incident has once again raised concerns about mining regulation and labour safety in Uttar Pradesh. The region, known for stone and mineral mining, has witnessed accidents in the past, leading to growing demands for:

  • Stronger safety compliance

  • Regular inspections

  • Monitoring of blasting operations

  • Strict action against illegal mining practices
