India’s Iron Ore Imports Hit Six-Year High from January–October; JSW Steel Emerges as Top Buyer

India’s iron ore imports surged to a six-year high during the January–October period, driven by strong demand from domestic steelmakers and supply tightness in key producing regions. Latest trade data shows that mills relied more heavily on overseas shipments to maintain production levels amid fluctuating local ore availability and rising grade requirements.

JSW Steel emerged as the largest importer, accounting for a significant share of the total inward shipments. The company, which operates large-scale integrated and electric arc furnace facilities, ramped up purchases of high-grade ore and pellets to optimize output and reduce production bottlenecks. Industry officials noted that JSW’s expanding capacity and preference for consistent-quality raw material have steadily increased its reliance on imports.

The jump in imports comes despite India being one of the world’s top iron ore producers. Analysts say that logistical challenges, rapid domestic consumption, and intermittent mining disruptions have pushed mills to secure overseas cargoes, particularly from Australia, Brazil, and South Africa.

Market experts also highlight a broader industry trend: steelmakers are increasingly shifting toward higher-grade ore to meet efficiency targets and reduce carbon emissions. Imported ore often offers better Fe content and lower impurities, making it attractive for producers aiming to improve blast furnace performance.

The surge in imports reflects India’s robust steel demand, driven by government-led infrastructure projects, automotive production, and a rebound in construction activity. With consumption expected to remain strong through the next quarter, traders anticipate continued interest in imported material—although global price volatility could influence shipment patterns.
