CAG Flags Slow Progress by Coal India in Achieving 3,000 MW Solar Power Target

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has flagged slow progress by Coal India Limited (CIL) in achieving its ambitious target of developing 3,000 MW of solar power capacity. In its observations, the audit body noted significant delays in project planning, approvals, and execution, raising concerns over the public sector giant’s transition towards renewable energy.

Coal India had announced the solar capacity target as part of its diversification strategy to support India’s clean energy goals and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. However, the CAG pointed out that only a limited portion of the planned capacity has been commissioned so far, with several projects remaining at preliminary or stalled stages.

The audit report highlighted issues such as delays in land identification, tendering processes, and coordination with implementing agencies. It also underlined the need for clearer timelines, stronger project monitoring, and accountability mechanisms to ensure timely completion of renewable energy projects.

The CAG’s findings assume significance as Coal India plays a key role in India’s energy landscape, and its progress in renewable energy is critical for meeting national climate and sustainability commitments.
