The Madras High Court has observed that Vedanta Limited is at liberty to file an appropriate plea before the competent authorities in connection with its proposed green copper plant.
The court made the observation while hearing matters related to Vedanta’s plans to establish a new, environmentally compliant copper facility. The bench clarified that while it was not issuing any direct approval or direction for setting up the plant, the company is free to approach statutory and regulatory authorities in accordance with law.
The High Court noted that any proposal for a new copper project would have to undergo the prescribed regulatory process, including environmental clearances, public consultations, and scrutiny by relevant state and central agencies. It underlined that such decisions fall within the domain of executive and regulatory bodies, not the judiciary.
Vedanta has maintained that the proposed green copper plant would adopt advanced technology, adhere to strict environmental norms, and contribute to employment generation and industrial growth. The company has also indicated that it intends to engage with stakeholders and authorities to address environmental and public concerns.
The court’s observation leaves the door open for Vedanta to formally submit its proposal and seek approvals under existing laws, while reaffirming that any future decision must strictly follow due process and regulatory compliance.
