Antamina commissions first Komatsu 4800XPC shovel in Peru

Copper-zinc miner Antamina says it has reached a new milestone in its journey toward operational excellence by becoming the first and only mine in Peru to operate the world’s largest shovel. The addition of the Komatsu P&H 4800XPC, one of the most advanced electric shovels globally, it adds strengthens its production capacity, raises safety and efficiency standards, and consolidates the development of its talent, reaffirming its position as a world-class mining operation.

The new shovel has a loading capacity of up to 135 t per pass, representing an increase of between 30 and 35 t compared to the equipment currently in operation. This technology allows for the loading of an ultra-class truck in just three passes, compared to the four passes previously required, optimising loading cycles and significantly improving operational efficiency.

“The commissioning of the world’s largest shovel is a milestone for Antamina and for the country’s mining industry. This advancement reflects our commitment to innovation and safety, and reaffirms our vision of operating with world-class standards,” stated Carlos Cotera, Vice President of Operations at Compañía Minera Antamina.

In addition to its impact on productivity, the shovel incorporates an advanced operational control system, which allows for more precise and controlled movement of the bucket during material unloading into the truck hoppers, reducing the risks associated with the maneeuvre and contributing to a safer operation. The cab has been designed according to ergonomic criteria, with excellent visibility, improving working conditions and operator well-being.

The equipment assembly process took approximately 90 days, during which outstanding safety performance was achieved, with zero accidents resulting in personal injury. As part of the project, the assigned operators completed the theoretical training provided by Komatsu and will continue with the practical phase integrated into production, in addition to having access to a specialised simulator for their training. The commissioning of this shovel is part of a progressive rollout that includes putting a second piece of equipment into operation in October and a third in 2027, consolidating an increasingly safe operation aligned with the highest technological standards in large-scale mining.

With this milestone, Antamina says it continues to strengthen its operational leadership and reputation as a world-class mining operation, setting a precedent for Peruvian and regional mining by incorporating state-of-the-art technology and developing its talent.
