Coal Ministry Amends Rules to Fast-Track Opening of Indian Mines

The Ministry of Coal has amended key rules to accelerate the opening of coal mines across India, aiming to boost domestic production and reduce procedural delays. The revised framework is designed to streamline approvals, tighten timelines, and enable quicker transition from allocation to operationalisation.

According to officials, the amendments simplify compliance requirements and allow parallel processing of clearances, helping mine developers begin operations sooner. The changes are expected to improve project viability, enhance investor confidence, and support the government’s objective of meeting rising energy demand through increased domestic output.

The move is also aligned with efforts to cut import dependence and strengthen energy security. By facilitating faster mine development, the government aims to stabilise supply to power, steel, and cement sectors while generating employment in mining regions.
