Hindustan Zinc, JNCASR Develop Zinc-Ion Battery Prototypes
Hindustan Zinc has partnered with the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) to develop zinc-ion battery prototypes, marking a significant step in advancing alternative energy storage technologies in India. The collaboration focuses on creating cost-effective, safe, and sustainable battery solutions using zinc-based chemistry.
Researchers involved in the project said the zinc-ion battery prototypes have shown promising performance in laboratory testing, with potential advantages such as improved safety, longer lifecycle, and lower material costs compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. Zinc’s abundant availability also makes the technology attractive for large-scale energy storage applications.
The development aligns with India’s broader push toward clean energy, indigenous technology innovation, and reduced dependence on critical mineral imports. Further testing and scalability assessments are expected before the technology moves toward commercial applications.
