First P&H 2300XPC AC shovel in North America commissioned at Mount Polley

On June 13, Komatsu’s Canadian National Service Group (NSG) completed commissioning of a P&H 2300XPC AC rope shovel at Imperial Metals’ Mount Polley Mine in British Columbia. The NSG is a specialised division within Komatsu Mining that provides highly skilled field technicians, maintenance support, and machinery commissioning for heavy mining equipment.

Mount Polley is a 100%-owned open-pit copper-gold mine located 56 kilometres northeast of Williams Lake in south-central BC. Commissioned in 1997, the mill typically processes six to seven million tonnes of ore annually.

This was significant as it was the first commissioning of this rope shovel model in North America. The P&H 2300XPC AC fleet now includes four operating machines worldwide, with additional units currently running in Russia and India. It features a nominal payload of 45.4 t and a dipper capacity ranging from 18 to 25 m³.

It includes the design elements that Komatsu rope shovels are most known for in the market – these include a twin-leg dipper handle for a stable dipper trajectory, faster cycle times and higher productivity; along with a rack and pinion crowd for lower maintenance, and consistent performance in all weathers. These are combined with mine-matched Optima dippers with optimised pitch braces
for precise rake angles.

Digital technology includes the Centurion electrical control system for superior performance, monitoring and data integration capabilities; plus a universal shovel interface to allow sending
and receiving of data with any mine management system. PreVail remote health management provides real-time machine health and performance management.

Komatsu describes the model as combining the functionality of a high-performance rope shovel with the practicality of a smaller machine. Designed to operate in high production mines, it says this proven series of shovels are ideal for coal, copper, iron ore and gold mines around the world. It cites up to 51% less CO2 release per tonne of material moved compared to equivalent hydraulic excavators; and a 12% lower cost per tonne of material moved.
