LiuGong breaks ground on first all electric heavy equipment factory in Indonesia
LiuGong on July 22 officially commenced the construction of the Indonesia Green Smart Industrial Park at the Karawang Artha Industrial Hill Industrial Estate in West Java. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Zheng Jin, Chairman of Guangxi LiuGong Group Co Ltd and Guangxi LiuGong Machinery Co Ltd as well as a number of other LiuGong senior managers, as well as representatives from Indonesia’s central and regional governments in addition to Djauhari Oratmangun, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to China and Mongolia.
The facility is scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2027 and will become Indonesia’s first manufacturing plant dedicated to the production of electric heavy equipment. This is significant due to the importance of the mining market in Indonesia – so construction equipment will not be the only focus. In addition, while the plant will strengthen Indonesia’s position as LiuGong’s manufacturing and supply hub for the Asia-Pacific region, the OEM says it will also gradually supply products to North American and European markets to meet BEV heavy equipment demand there as well.
Just recently, LiuGong announced the official launched of its full range of electric heavy equipment in the United States and Canada – including the 856HE battery-electric wheel loader, 820TE battery-electric loader and 924FE battery-electric excavator.
The LiuGong DW105AE battery mining truck is already running in Indonesia across several sites
The level of demand for electric machines in Indonesian mining has been clear in recent years. In 2024, LiuGong delivered a fleet of 27 70 t class DW105AE battery electric wide body trucks to Indonesian mining contractor PT Samudera Mulia Abadi (SMA) for use at the PT J Resources Bolaang Mongondow owned Bakan gold mine in North Sulawesi. A fleet of these trucks was also delivered to contractor PT Cipta Kridatama in 2025 for use at the coal mining operations of PT Borneo Indobara. The DW105AE is powered by a 528 kWh LFP battery, allowing it to operate for 5-6 hours. Despite its size, the unit requires only 45 minutes to reach approximately 80% charge and is ready to resume operations. LiuGong has also been promoting the L8600DE 8×4 electric tipper truck in Indonesia.
The OEM has also been selling and promoting electric excavators in the country including the 39 t class 939F, 60 t class 960FE, 95 t class 995FE, and 135 t class 9135FE; plus it has delivered electric wheel loaders like the 856HE to Indonesia.
The project will also increase the use of locally sourced components, strengthen supply chain collaboration, and cultivate industrial talent to support Indonesia’s downstream industrialisation strategy and accelerate the development of the country’s heavy equipment ecosystem. New manufacturing plants like this one outside of its home factory in Liuzhou, also offer LiuGong greater future trade flexibility in relation to tariffs.
Zheng Jin stated that the Indonesia Green Smart Industrial Park demonstrates LiuGong’s long-term commitment to the Indonesian market. “The Indonesia Green Smart Industrial Park reflects LiuGong’s long-term commitment to the Indonesian market. We will continue to deepen our partnerships in Indonesia and across ASEAN, foster innovation through open collaboration, and work closely with industry partners to support sustainable industrial development and the region’s green transformation.”
The project will be developed in three phases. During the first phase, LiuGong will establish production lines for electric excavators and electric wheel loaders with a planned annual production capacity of 5,000 units. The facility will incorporate advanced smart manufacturing technologies, including Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), Rail Guided Vehicles (RGVs), and a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) to digitalise production processes and improve operational efficiency.
Luo Guobing, Vice Chairman and President of Guangxi LiuGong Machinery Co Ltd, emphasised that the Indonesia Green Smart Industrial Park will serve not only as a manufacturing facility but also as a green and intelligent industrial platform integrating manufacturing, research and development, talent cultivation, and industry collaboration. “LiuGong will establish the Indonesia Product Application Research and Development (R&D) Center and collaborate with Universitas Gadjah Mada to promote technology transfer and develop local talent. We hope this initiative will inject new momentum into the sustainable development of Indonesia’s heavy equipment industry.”
The development of the Indonesia Green Smart Industrial Park marks a significant milestone in LiuGong’s global manufacturing strategy. Through PT LiuGong Machinery Manufacturing Indonesia (LMMI), the company will continue to deepen its localization strategy, strengthen its global manufacturing capabilities, and enhance the global value chain for electric heavy equipment.
The project also represents an important component of the integrated electric vehicle ecosystem being developed within the Karawang Artha Industrial Hill (KAIH) Industrial Estate. LiuGong’s presence further reinforces KAIH’s position as an industrial zone supporting the electric vehicle supply chain while driving investment growth and the development of Indonesia’s electric vehicle industry.
