Sunward hails growth in South African market for top hammer rigs

In recent years, Changsha-headquartered Sunward says it has achieved continuous breakthroughs in overseas markets such as Africa and the Americas, as part of a steady acceleration in its global expansion.

It says that its rock drilling products have performed particularly well in South Africa, “a success inextricably linked to the company’s strategy of customised R&D; by gaining a deep understanding of local operating conditions and precisely meeting customer needs.” The company operates a large distribution and service facility in Jet Park, Boksburg.

This month’s Sunward’s mining and rock drilling R&D team travelled to South Africa for a two-week series of on-site customer visits. Comprising product managers, hydraulic engineers, and powertrain engineers, the team visited eight clients across major mining areas – covering operations ranging from platinum, coal, chrome, manganese, and limestone mines to aggregate quarries. It says through these face-to-face interactions, the team gathered direct feedback from the field, ensuring that product performance upgrades remain driven by actual customer needs.

The company adds: “In recent years, as South African mining operations have increasingly demanded higher drilling precision and enhanced safety standards, the market share of surface top-hammer drill rigs and excavator-mounted drill attachments has steadily risen due to their operational flexibility and efficiency.”

Since entering the South African market, Sunward Mining & Rock Equipment says it has deployed over a hundred units to South African mining sites; and that these machines have maintained an average availability rate exceeding 90%, earning positive feedback from customers.

Sales volumes have nearly quadrupled over the past two years, reflecting it says strong market expansion momentum. It adds: “From the continuous iteration of flagship models like the SWDE165B to the current volume delivery of various rock drilling models to South Africa, Sunward Mining & Rock Equipment is steadily deepening its presence in the African market. This visit exemplifies the company’s customer-centric philosophy, aiming to align research and development more closely with on-site realities and ensure products are better suited to specific operating conditions.”

During the site visits, the team engaged in in-depth discussions with frontline operators, equipment managers, and procurement decision-makers, systematically gathering improvement suggestions across various dimensions – such as operational habits, suitability for specific working conditions, and ease of maintenance.

Currently, Sunward Mining & Rock says it is accelerating product adaptation upgrades based on the frontline data collected and the typical operating conditions found in South African mines. The goal is to better align the equipment with local customer usage habits and operational requirements, while continuously enhancing durability, reliability, and overall operational efficiency.

Simultaneously, Sunward says it is refining its internal collaboration mechanisms to foster efficient coordination among R&D, production, sales, and service teams. “This enables the company to rapidly deliver customised solutions for diverse mining sites and provide immediate responses to customer issues.”
