Despite a horrendous year-over-year sales decline globally in the first quarter, including in California, Tesla’s two mass-market models topped the automobile sales charts in California in the 1st quarter. Well, instead of taking first and second place, as they had previously, they took first and third. Close enough.
The Tesla Model Y was the best selling automobile — electric or otherwise — in the Golden State. In fact, it had almost 50% more sales than the #2 Toyota RAV4.
The Model 3 was then a notable drop below the RAV4, and it was just barely ahead of the Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V, and even Honda Civic.
Unfortunately, there were no other electric vehicle models in the top 10.
Looking solely at the SUV & truck market, the Model Y towers above the crowd. You have to go down to 14th place before you find another fully electric model, the new-ish Honda Prologue with about a fifth of the Model Y’s sales. Though, note that a fair portion of the #11 Chevrolet Equinox’s sales were sales of the electric version — 2,688 sales out of 5,003.
Looking only at passenger cars, the Tesla Model 3 was still the top selling mode. No other EV made it into the top 8.
