BYD sales continue to grow. Though, there are some big differences depending on powertrain.
In the month of May, BYD’s passenger car sales (all plugin vehicles) were up 14.1% year over year. Looking across the first 5 months of the year, its passenger vehicle sales were up 37%. Not meteoric, but not too shabby, especially when considering the huge number of sales it had already achieved and was growing from.
It gets better, though. The company’s full electric vehicle (BEV) sales were up much more than that. BEV sales were up 39.6% year over year in the month of May, and they were up 40.5% across the first five months of the year.
What that means is the company’s plugin hybrid sales were not too great. In fact, BYD’s PHEV sales were slightly down — by 6.3% — in the month of May. Through the first five months of the year, though, sales were still up 34%.
Like I said, it’s solid growth. It’s not enormous like at XPENG at the moment, but BYD is starting from a much higher base, which makes this all the more confusing.
Stay tuned for more BYD sales trends in the coming months. The brand is now leading the charge in China and globally.
