Strengthening Coal Logistics: High-Level Review Meeting Between Coal and Railway Ministries

In a significant move to enhance coal transportation and ensure efficient supply chain management, a high-level meeting was convened today between Union Minister of Coal and Mines Shri G. Kishan Reddy and Union Minister of Railways, Electronics & Information Technology and Information & Broadcasting Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw. The discussion centered on reviewing the existing coal logistics framework and exploring strategies for its optimization.

Focus on Silo Loading Infrastructure

One of the key highlights of the meeting was the discussion on accelerating the development and utilization of silo loading infrastructure. Silo loading systems offer a more efficient, dust-free, and faster alternative to traditional coal loading methods. These mechanized systems not only improve turnaround time but also enhance environmental compliance, reducing the carbon footprint of coal logistics.

Both ministers emphasized the urgent need to fast-track the commissioning of silos and ensure their optimal usage in coal evacuation to power plants and industries. The Ministry of Coal and Coal India Limited (CIL) have already initiated several silo projects, and the meeting aimed to synchronize these efforts with the broader railway infrastructure development plans.

Review of Critical Rail Infrastructure Projects

The meeting also involved a comprehensive review of critical rail connectivity and capacity enhancement projects being undertaken by Indian Railways and CIL. These projects are pivotal for ensuring the smooth evacuation of coal from mines, especially in key mining states like Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.

Enhancing last-mile connectivity, double-tracking of key routes, construction of dedicated rail corridors, and the development of multimodal logistics parks were among the topics discussed. These infrastructure upgrades are intended to reduce logistical bottlenecks and improve turnaround time for coal rakes.

Strengthening Inter-Ministerial Coordination

Recognizing the complexity of coal logistics that involves multiple stakeholders, the ministers agreed to enhance inter-ministerial coordination mechanisms. The goal is to streamline the entire coal supply chain — from mine to plant — by aligning policies, sharing real-time data, and implementing joint monitoring systems.

Efforts are underway to integrate digital technologies such as real-time tracking, AI-based forecasting tools, and centralized control systems to improve visibility and decision-making across the logistics chain.

Towards Energy Security and Sustainability

This meeting reflects the government’s strategic focus on ensuring energy security and uninterrupted power supply, especially ahead of the high-demand monsoon and festive seasons. Efficient coal logistics is critical not only for power generation but also for industrial growth and economic stability.

Both ministries reiterated their commitment to timely project execution and policy alignment to address present challenges and future requirements of the coal sector.
