BQE Water and Hudbay to implement the first SART plant in Canada

BQE Water Inc, a leader in the treatment of mine waters and metallurgical bleed streams, reports that it has entered into a contract with Hudbay Minerals Inc to progress the engineering design of a SART plant which will be integrated into their mill in Snow Lake, Manitoba, to the Issued-for-Construction (IFC) phase of the project.

The SART process, which recovers cyanide consumed by base metals and recycles it back into gold extraction. This lowers operating costs while reducing the environmental footprint of mining projects. Hudbay operates the Lalor mine (gold, zinc, copper, silver) in Snow Lake.

The decision to proceed with SART construction followed approximately six months of bench scale testing, METSIM modelling, and preliminary engineering completed by BQE Water, and the SART process due diligence visit of plants operated under BQE technical supervision by Hudbay’s technical team.

With the detailed engineering design underway, BQE Water and Hudbay are discussing plans for site construction, commissioning, and ongoing technical SART operations support.

David Kratochvil, President & CEO of BQE Water, commented: “It has been a real pleasure to work with the Hudbay’s team, who clearly understood the importance of a comprehensive assessment of integration of SART into one of their operations, and the value of BQE Water’s expertise in achieving this objective. On a personal level, I am very happy for Chris Fleming, the inventor of SART, and a long time Director of BQE Water, that his Canadian invention will finally find its first Canadian application after a dozen plants built elsewhere.”

BQE Water is a service provider specialising in water treatment and management for metals mining, smelting and refining. It says it is helping to transform the way the industry thinks about water in the context of natural resource projects by offering services and expertise which enables more sustainable water management practices and improved overall project performance at reduced risks. “BQE Water invests in innovation and has developed unique intellectual property through the commercialisation of several new technologies at mine sites around the world for organisations including Glencore, Jiangxi Copper, Freeport-McMoRan and the US EPA.”
