BYD electric car sales have been growing strongly, but that’s nothing compared to the growth of BYD’s commercial electric vehicles.
BYD’s commercial vehicle sales are reported separately as buses and “others.” While its electric buses have gotten much more attention for years — over a decade even — its BYD’s non-bus commercial vehicles sales that have been growing like gangbusters in recent months. You can see here or here that BYD sells a variety of different electric trucks. For some reason or another, demand for these has exploded.
BYD’s electric buses actually had a rough month last month, declining in sales 41.4% year over year. Through the first 4 months overall, its bus sales were up 3.7%, just a smudge.
However, its non-bus electric car sales were up enormously — 1248.6% in April and 1195.2% in January–April. They increased from 525 in April 2024 to 7,080 in April 2025, and from 1,595 in January–April 2024 to 20,659 in January–April 2025.
I was a bit concerned that after the strong rise in sales in December, we’d see a sharp drop. Then they continued to be high even through the Chinese New Year! But could they maintain such a higher level? Well, April says yes. That chart is beautiful, and now I can’t wait to see what May and the rest of the year show.
