BYD’s electric car sales have been growing fast, but they haven’t been growing as fast as BYD’s electric commercial vehicle sales.
Let’s start with the buses. BYD’s electric bus sales were up 79.5% in May, compared to May 2024. Sales rose from 239 to 429. Looking at the first five months of the year combined, electric bus sales were up 14.3% That’s not shabby, but, clearly, the year-to-date growth is much better.
Switching focus from buses to trucks, BYD’s electric truck sales were up even much more than buses in May.
As you can see in the chart below, BYD’s non-bus commercial vehicle sales were still much higher in May than in the year before, even though they did drop down a bit month over month.

BYD scored 5,117 non-bus commercial vehicle sales in May 2025, up from 1,090 in May 2024. That’s a 369.4% increase year over year. Of course, as you can see in that chart, the previous two months were even better, and that contributed to January–May 2025 sales being 860% higher than January–May 2024 sales.
But perhaps nothing is better for drawing a “wow” than sharing the raw numbers. In January–May 2024, BYD had 2,685 non-bus commercial vehicle sales. In January–May 2025, BYD had 25,776 non-bus commercial vehicle sales. Wow!
Naturally, the bus numbers are not as dramatic, but if you add them all together, BYD’s commercial vehicle sales increased by 531.43% year over year, from 4,391 in January–May 2024 to 27,726 in January–May 2025. Impressive.
