Chhattisgarh: SECL’s Mine Water Utilization Boosts Irrigation on Over 3,000 Hectares, Doubling Farmers’ Income

In a pioneering move towards sustainable mining practices, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has significantly contributed to agricultural development in Chhattisgarh. By repurposing mine water for irrigation, SECL has facilitated the irrigation of over 3,000 hectares of farmland near its collieries, leading to a remarkable doubling of farmers’ incomes in the region.

Sustainable Utilization of Mine Water

During coal mining operations, substantial volumes of water accumulate in mine sumps. SECL has effectively harnessed this mine water for various community purposes, including irrigation, thereby reducing dependency on traditional water sources and enhancing agricultural productivity.

In the fiscal year 2023–24, SECL made available approximately 258 lakh kiloliters (KL) of mine water for irrigation purposes. This initiative has not only optimized the use of mine water but also contributed to the sustainable development of the surrounding agricultural communities.

Impact on Farmers’ Income

The utilization of mine water for irrigation has had a transformative impact on the local farming community. By ensuring a consistent and reliable water supply, farmers have been able to cultivate crops more effectively, leading to increased yields and improved quality of produce. This agricultural enhancement has directly contributed to a substantial increase in farmers’ incomes, effectively doubling their earnings.

Community and Environmental Benefits

Beyond agricultural improvements, SECL’s initiative has brought about several community and environmental benefits:

  • Water Conservation: By repurposing mine water, SECL has alleviated pressure on local freshwater resources, promoting sustainable water management practices.

  • Community Empowerment: The initiative has empowered local farmers by providing them with the tools and resources needed for enhanced agricultural practices.

  • Environmental Sustainability: Utilizing mine water for irrigation reduces the environmental impact of mining operations and contributes to the overall ecological balance.
