Coal India and UPRVUNL Forge Partnership for 500 MW Solar Power Project in Uttar Pradesh

On May 5, 2025, Coal India Limited (CIL) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly establish a 500 MW solar power project in Uttar Pradesh. This initiative aligns with CIL’s commitment to diversify its energy portfolio and support India’s transition to renewable energy sources.

Strategic Objectives

  • Green Energy Expansion:
CIL aims to install 3,000 MW of solar capacity by the financial year 2025–26, with plans to increase this to 5,000 MW by 2029–30 across various locations in India.

  • Energy Demand Fulfillment:
The collaboration seeks to meet the growing energy demands of Uttar Pradesh and ensure energy security for the state.

  • Future Collaborations:
The MoU includes provisions for exploring additional opportunities for joint efforts in renewable energy development between CIL and UPRVUNL.

Recent Developments

In December 2024, CIL awarded KPI Green Energy Limited a ₹13.11 billion contract to develop a 300 MW grid-connected ground-mounted solar project at Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat. This project encompasses design, engineering, procurement, supply, erection, testing, and commissioning.
