Coal India Appoints Sanoj Kumar Jha as Interim Chairman-cum-Managing Director

State-run mining giant Coal India Limited (CIL) has appointed Sanoj Kumar Jha as its Interim Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD), effective immediately, following the superannuation of the outgoing CMD, Pramod Agrawal.

The announcement was made on Friday by the Ministry of Coal, which confirmed that Jha, a seasoned bureaucrat with extensive experience in the energy and mining sectors, will lead the company until a full-time CMD is appointed.

Jha currently serves as the Secretary of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) and is known for his deep expertise in coal policy, regulatory affairs, and power sector governance. His appointment comes at a crucial time as Coal India navigates supply chain challenges, production targets, and the transition toward cleaner energy initiatives.

“Under Jha’s leadership, the company is expected to continue its focus on achieving record production levels while ensuring environmental compliance and operational efficiency,” the Coal Ministry said in a statement.

Coal India, the world’s largest coal producer, has been under increasing pressure to balance India’s rising power demand with its commitment to sustainability and diversification into cleaner energy sources.

Industry experts view Jha’s appointment as a stabilizing move, given his administrative experience and understanding of both the regulatory and operational dimensions of India’s energy ecosystem.

A permanent CMD appointment is expected to be finalized in the coming months after the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) completes its evaluation process.
