Coal India Limited (CIL) has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the development of underground coal gasification (UCG) projects in its leasehold areas, marking a step towards adopting advanced technologies for cleaner and more efficient utilisation of coal resources.
The EOI invites participation from technology providers, developers, and industry partners with expertise in underground coal gasification. UCG is a process that converts coal into synthesis gas in situ, enabling energy extraction from deep or unmineable coal seams while reducing the need for conventional mining operations.
Coal India said the initiative aligns with its strategy to diversify coal utilisation pathways and explore innovative solutions that support energy security while addressing environmental considerations. Successful implementation of UCG projects could help unlock additional coal reserves and contribute to the production of cleaner fuels and chemicals.
The move comes as India continues to focus on enhancing domestic energy production and reducing dependence on imports, while simultaneously exploring technologies that lower the environmental footprint of fossil fuels.
