Coal India Limited (CIL) has stepped up its focus on automated coal sampling systems as part of a broader push to enhance transparency, improve coal quality assessment, and reduce disputes with consumers over grade declarations.
Officials said the move towards automation is aimed at eliminating manual intervention in the sampling process, which has long been a concern for power producers and other bulk consumers. Automated coal sampling ensures scientifically accurate, tamper-proof, and representative samples, leading to fairer pricing and higher confidence in supplied coal quality.
According to Coal India Limited, the rollout of automated sampling facilities is being prioritised at major dispatch points, including rapid loading systems, silo loading points, and key railway sidings across its subsidiaries. Several such systems are already operational, while more are under various stages of installation and commissioning.
The initiative aligns with the government’s emphasis on digitalisation and process transparency in the coal sector. By leveraging advanced sensors, mechanical cutters, and real-time data integration, automated systems minimise human error and speed up sample analysis, benefiting both producers and consumers.
Industry experts say automated coal sampling is particularly important as power demand rises and coal dispatch volumes increase. Accurate quality assessment helps power plants optimise operations, improve efficiency, and manage emissions more effectively.
CIL’s increased focus on automation is also expected to strengthen trust with customers, reduce grievances related to grade slippage, and support long-term reforms in India’s coal supply chain. The company plans to continue expanding automated sampling coverage as part of its modernisation and efficiency drive.
