Coal India Production and Offtake Decline as Power Sector Demand Softens

Coal India Limited reported a decline in both coal production and offtake as demand from the power sector weakened, reflecting slower consumption by thermal power plants. The drop comes amid higher coal inventories at power stations and reduced generation growth, which have dampened near-term fuel requirements.

Industry sources said lower power demand, coupled with adequate stock levels, has led to moderated lifting by utilities, directly impacting Coal India’s offtake volumes. Production was also adjusted in response to softer demand conditions, as the miner focused on inventory management and operational efficiency.

Despite the short-term slowdown, Coal India continues to play a central role in meeting the country’s long-term energy needs. The company remains focused on ensuring supply reliability, optimising costs, and aligning output with evolving demand patterns in the power sector.
