Coal Ministry Eases Approval Process, Cuts Geological Report Timelines by 3 Months to Accelerate Coal & Lignite Development
In a major push to enhance India’s domestic energy capacity, the Ministry of Coal has simplified the approval process for coal and lignite exploration and slashed the timelines for completing Geological Reports (GRs) by three months. The reform is aimed at boosting exploration efficiency, fast-tracking new project development, and strengthening the country’s long-term energy security.
The Ministry announced that procedural redundancies have been removed, and several clearances previously required at multiple stages have been consolidated into a streamlined mechanism. Officials noted that the digitisation of workflows, improved coordination among agencies, and introduction of a single-window approval system have significantly reduced bureaucratic delays.
By cutting the time required for Geological Reports—critical documents for mine planning and resource estimation—the government aims to expedite the transition of coal and lignite blocks from exploration to production. Faster GR completion is expected to accelerate auction processes and improve investment attractiveness for both public and private sector players.
According to the Ministry, the reforms underline India’s commitment to increasing domestic coal production, reducing import dependence, and ensuring uninterrupted supply for the power, steel, and industrial sectors.
Industry experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that reduced timelines and smoother approval systems could substantially improve the pace of resource development.
