Coal Production from Captive and Commercial Mines Rises Sharply in August 2025

India’s coal sector reported robust growth in August 2025, with production from captive and commercial mines reaching 14.43 million tonnes (MT) and dispatches touching 15.07 MT. These figures, released by the Ministry of Coal, highlight the sector’s improving operational performance and its critical role in meeting the country’s growing energy demands.

According to the Press Information Bureau, the cumulative production and dispatches for the financial year 2025–26 up to August showed significant year-on-year growth. Production rose by 11.88 percent, while dispatches climbed 9.12 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. The data underscores improved efficiency, greater utilization of mining capacity, and stronger supply chain performance across India’s coal sector.

Charts released by the Ministry indicate consistent upward trends in both production and dispatch over the past three years.

Officials attribute the growth to a series of strategic policy interventions, tighter monitoring of mining operations, and streamlined approval mechanisms. The Ministry emphasized that continuous support to stakeholders has helped accelerate project clearances and expand production capabilities, enabling the sector to deliver higher volumes in a sustainable manner.

The Ministry of Coal reiterated its commitment to ensuring energy security while driving efficiency and sustainability in mining operations. It highlighted that the strong growth in captive and commercial mining not only supports domestic power generation but also reduces dependence on coal imports, strengthening India’s energy independence.

With August’s results setting a positive trajectory, the coal sector is expected to play an increasingly vital role in fueling industrial growth, infrastructure development, and the broader economic momentum in the current financial year.
