Codelco and Microsoft sign mining AI & analytics collaboration agreement

With the goal of deepening its digital transformation and advancing the strategic use of emerging technologies, Codelco has signed an agreement with Microsoft establishing a framework for collaboration to evaluate joint initiatives in artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, automation, and digital security, among other areas.

The agreement, signed by Codelco’s CEO, Rubén Alvarado, and the President of Microsoft Latin America, Tito Arciniega, builds upon a working relationship of more than 27 years between the two companies, during which they have developed projects in multiple areas. This new phase seeks to incorporate cutting-edge tools, adhering to high standards of cybersecurity and data protection.

“Working with a world-class technology partner like Microsoft consolidates our leadership in the future of mining. Faced with rapid digital transformation, we must process and consider large volumes of data in our operations. That is the objective of this alliance: to optimise the management of our assets through innovative solutions, maximising the value we deliver to the State of Chile,” commented Alvarado.

“This alliance with Codelco reflects the potential that artificial intelligence represents to drive the development of the mining sector and the Chilean market in general, enabling safer, more efficient, and more sustainable operations focused on people, productivity, and long-term value for the business and the country,” stated Arciniega.

Among the areas of work to be evaluated are the intensive use of data, advanced analytics, and artificial intelligence to improve decision-making; the development of more autonomous and secure operations; the automation of critical processes; the strengthening of cybersecurity; and the promotion of technology training programs for employees and teams. The agreement also includes the possibility of developing pilot projects, participating in early testing of new solutions, sharing international experiences, and fostering connections with the innovation ecosystem.

The agreement will have an initial term of 18 months and will feature a joint governance structure that will allow for strategic and operational monitoring of the initiatives.
