Codelco and NTT DATA sign future of mining strategic alliance

Codelco and Japan’s NTT DATA have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) marking the beginning of a strategic alliance aimed they say at driving the future of mining. The agreement seeks to integrate emerging technologies and advanced solutions that strengthen automation, safety, and sustainability in the operations of the world’s leading copper producer.

The agreement “will allow the exploration and implementation of cutting-edge technologies – that is, advanced innovations that transform the industry and address global challenges, such as artificial intelligence and advanced connectivity networks, among others – with a focus on security, sustainability, productivity and the development of new capabilities.”

The MoU covers a wide range of areas for collaboration, including advanced connectivity and digital infrastructure (5G/6G, photonic and satellite networks), generative artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum computing, autonomous operations, and clean technologies, among others.

Any joint initiatives will be implemented progressively through a cooperation model that promotes knowledge transfer, open innovation, and the creation of shared value between both organisations, combining NTT DATA’s global experience and capabilities in transforming industrial processes with Codelco’s mining expertise.

“At Codelco, we know we have a mature, large-scale mining industry facing unique challenges, which is why innovation has become increasingly important. That’s why, now more than ever, we need to partner with the best in the country and the world to ensure our future for the next 50 years. Today, our future is built on alliances that allow us to learn, innovate, and adopt cutting-edge technologies to maintain our leading role globally. Every step we take in innovation serves a greater purpose: strengthening Codelco as a pillar of sustainable development in Chile and the world,” emphasised Máximo Pacheco, Chairman of the Board of Codelco.

“Improving safety and productivity within the mining industry is fundamental. NTT DATA will help address these challenges by providing a comprehensive R&D framework that incorporates generative artificial intelligence, autonomous robot control, operational understanding through digital twins, and process productivity enhancement using quantum computing,” added Yutaka Sasaki, Representative Director, President, and CEO of NTT DATA. “We look forward to making collaborative progress on the product.”

The agreement includes a governance structure that comprises strategic committees and technical coordination teams, responsible for assessing challenges and opportunities, as well as prioritising and monitoring the implementation of programs and projects.
