Codelco & Hexagon sign MoU on collaboration from CAS to autonomy

Chilean copper mining major Codelco and mining technology leader Hexagon have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that establishes the basis for a strategic collaboration aimed at exploring, developing, validating and implementing advanced technological solutions in the Corporation’s various operations.

This agreement lays the groundwork for developing future specific agreements and formalising projects aimed at strengthening operational safety, furthering the automation and digitalisation of production processes, and promoting environmental analysis and monitoring tools that contribute to increasingly sustainable management.

The MoU establishes a framework for conducting pilot programs and testing products under development or not yet commercialised, as well as for adapting Hexagon’s technologies to Codelco’s specific operational challenges. Hexagon is a global leader in measurement technologies, pushing the boundaries of operational innovation and data analytics to help its customers optimise resources and move materials safely.

These initiatives include, among others, fatigue and distraction alert systems, collision prevention and pedestrian protection technologies, sensors and visualisation platforms for real-time environmental monitoring, artificial intelligence applied to safety and processes, autonomous and fleet management solutions for mining trucks, advanced tools for assisted drilling, and geospatial analysis capabilities that allow for environmental impact assessment and support for responsible decisions.

“This alliance is part of our drive towards digitalisation, with the goal of moving towards safer, more efficient, and more sustainable mining, while also strengthening our ties with world-class technology players. We are paving the way for the mining of the future through collaboration, to fulfil our purpose of being a pillar of sustainable development in Chile and the world,” stated Felipe Lagno, Corporate Manager of Innovation and Technology at Codelco.

“We are proud to join Codelco in an alliance that places safety, operational excellence, and environmental responsibility at the forefront,” said Dave Goddard, President of Hexagon’s Mining division. “This MoU formalises our relationship and establishes the foundation for working together, testing and optimising technologies under real-world conditions to ensure they deliver tangible value to miners and communities. Together, we can demonstrate how collaboration and digital innovation can drive positive transformation in the mining industry.”

The MoU will have an initial term of five years and will be governed by principles agreed upon by both parties, including confidentiality, responsible use of technical information, and a common framework for project development.
