Dr. Ram Nath Sharma’s visionary leadership was instrumental in shaping India’s coal industry during a transformative era. As the first Chairman of Coal India Ltd. (CIL), his tenure from 1972 to 1980 laid the foundation for what would become the world’s largest coal-producing company.

An alumnus of the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, Dr. Sharma began his career in 1949 as a mining engineer with Tata Steel. Following the nationalization of coal mines in the early 1970s, the government enlisted his expertise to lead key subsidiaries such as Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. (BCCL), Central Coalfields Ltd. (CCL), and Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI). His leadership culminated in his appointment as Chairman of CIL, where he oversaw the integration of fragmented mining operations into a cohesive national enterprise.

Beyond his executive roles, Dr. Sharma contributed significantly to academia and policy. He served on the governing bodies of premier institutions like the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and ISM Dhanbad, and was a faculty member at the Administrative Staff College of India in Hyderabad. His scholarly work includes the 1981 paper “Application of Coal Research in India,” which emphasized the importance of adopting global advancements to meet India’s energy demands.

Even after retiring from public service, Dr. Sharma remained active in community development, particularly in education. As Chairman of the Jamshedpur Arya Samaj Trust, he has been dedicated to enhancing educational services. His lifelong commitment to the coal sector and public service has left an enduring legacy.
