In response to my article last week titled “EV Enthusiasts Are Losing The Battle In The USA Right Now,” Mike Shurtleff provided a short but pointed response. Here was his comment:

“EV Enthusiasts Are Losing The Battle In The USA Right Now”
…BUT WINNING THE BEV WAR …GLOBALLY …RIGHT NOW!!!
Get out of the way Luddites!!!

Great point!

Sometimes, as an American, it is hard to not focus too much on the challenges in the United States. Of course, being the second largest auto market in the world, what happens in the US is important. But it is not the full story, or even half the story.

As Mike highlights, we should recognize and keep in mind that electric vehicles are doing much better outside the US and they are winning the “BEV war” globally.

Of course, we have monthly reports from José Pontes on this, so I don’t need to go into great detail. See his latest World EV Sales Report here: Global EV Sales Report — Tiny Wuling Mini Beats Tesla Model Y!!!. And a new one should be coming soon.

As that report shows, BEV registrations rose by 19% globally in October, to 1.3 million registrations. (Plugin vehicles overall rose by 10% to 1.9 million registrations.)

Furthermore, 19% of all auto registrations were BEVs in October, and the figure for January–October was 17%. For plugin vehicles overall, it was 17% and 28%, respectively.

Go talk to anyone you know (who doesn’t read this site) and ask them what percentage of global auto sales are electric vehicles this year. I would bet money that pretty much anyone you ask doesn’t come close to those figures (unless you live in China, or parts of Europe).

And it goes far beyond China and Europe now, even if they have been the clear leaders. Compelling, attractive, relatively cheap electric vehicles have been entering market after market this year. Check out our new report on Latin America from Juan Diego Celemín Mojica, for example: Latin America EV Sales Report: 6% Market Share Reached in Q3 Thanks to 55% Growth YoY. Or Juan’s update on Colombia.

Electric vehicles are still growing strong. They are winning the war against fossil-fueled automobiles. Yes, it is still early, more fossil-fueled automobiles are still sold every day. However, BEVs are eating into their market share quickly and decisively. Stay tuned for our latest numbers from Jose, and let’s remember to cheer on the progress we’re making!
