FLS awarded major order to supply key technologies for a BHQ iron ore beneficiation project in south Asia

FLS says it has been awarded multiple repeat contracts to supply key technologies for a Banded Haematite Quartzite (BHQ) beneficiation – a process of upgrading low-grade iron ore into a premium grade concentrate.

The scope “includes the delivery of a High-Pressure Grinding Roll (the largest of its kind), nine of the world’s largest stirred media mills with hydrocyclones, nextSTEP flotation technology, concentrate thickeners and the world’s largest filtered tailing system. In addition, FLS will provide its advanced process control systems as well as supervision, start-up, and commissioning services.”

“This award underscores the strength of our customer relationships and our ability to deliver high-capacity beneficiation solutions at scale. By combining energy-efficient grinding, advanced flotation technologies, filtered tailings technologies and digital process control, we support a reliable ramp-up while improving productivity and reducing environmental impact. This project is fully aligned with our MissionZero ambition to enable more sustainable mining operations,” comments Qasim Abrahams, Products Business Line President at FLS.

The order value, which was booked in the second quarter of 2026, totals approximately DKK 300 million, with project commissioning expected in 2027-2028.

While the statement only said that the project was in south Asia, IM understands that the latest contracts are in addition to previously announced orders related to expansion plans at iron ore mining major Lloyds Metals & Energy Ltd (LMEL) in India which is using state of the art FLS mineral processing equipment such as 18 x FTM5000 vertical tower mills and two 3 m by 2 m HPGRs which are some of the largest of their kind ever delivered and are 30-40% more efficient than traditional systems. These previous orders for LMEL were mentioned in the FLS earnings call for Q1 2025.

The FLS equipment is being deployed in a 45 Mt/y dry grinding facility at Hedri in the Surjagarh area that is under construction which will upgrade the banded haematite quartzite into a high-grade iron concentrate, unlocking its potential as a valuable resource for the steel industry. Hedri will also use Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) extensively plus FLSmidth’s nextSTEP™ flotation cell technology.
