GAIL and Hindustan Copper Join Forces to Explore Critical Mineral Resources Strategic Alliance for Resource Independence

GAIL (India) Limited and Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding to collaboratively explore and develop critical mineral resources both domestically and internationally. This partnership aims to strengthen India’s self-reliance in essential minerals vital for emerging clean energy and advanced technology sectors.

Leadership at the Helm
The MoU was signed by Sanjay Agarwal, Executive Director (Business Development & Exploration & Production) of GAIL, and Binod Kumar Gupta, Executive Director (Mining – Resource Planning) of HCL. The signing took place in the presence of senior officials including R.K. Singhal, Director (Business Development) at GAIL, and Sanjeev K. Singh, Chairman & Managing Director of HCL.

Core Objectives

  • Leverage Complementary Expertise: GAIL brings strong energy infrastructure capabilities, while HCL offers extensive mineral exploration and mining expertise. The alliance plans to integrate the entire mineral value chain—from exploration to processing.
  • Targeted Minerals: The focus will be on critical minerals such as copper, lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements, which are essential for manufacturing batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, and other clean energy technologies.
  • Reduce Import Dependency: India currently relies heavily on imports of these minerals, especially from China. Building domestic and international supply chains will be crucial for long-term energy security and industrial competitiveness.
  • Aligned with Sustainable Growth: GAIL stated that the initiative reflects a commitment to tapping domestic mineral potential and exploring global opportunities to promote sustainable development and strategic autonomy.
