Good & Bad News On The Xiaomi SU7 & Xiaomi YU7

We have some news on the extremely popular Xiaomi SU7 — good & bad. We also have some news on the Xiaomi YU7 — only good news on this one. Let’s jump into it.

Xiaomi SU7 — Bad & Good News

The Xiaomi SU7 is selling like popcorn at a movie theater. We also now have some interesting details on the numbers from Xiaomi.

75,869 units of the SU7 were sold in Q1 2025. That means 258,000 units have been sold since deliveries began in April of last year.

Xiaomi made 18.6 billion yuan ($2.58 billion) in revenue from its EV and AI innovation business division in the first quarter of 2025 — 18.1 billion yuan ($2.51 billion) from EVs and 500 million yuan ($69 million) from related businesses.

The EV and AI innovation business division made a gross profit margin of 23.2% in the quarter, which is some of the good news, but the division also ended up with an operating loss of 500 million yuan ($69.4 million), some of the bad news. That translates to an average loss of 6,500 yuan ($903 million) per vehicle in Q1 2025.

Now, for some more good news: that’s a big improvement from 45,000 yuan ($6,250) per vehicle in 2024. So, Xiaomi has made a lot of progress in cutting operating losses per vehicle produced, and eventually reaching a per-vehicle profit. It’s even possible the company achieves an operating profit in Q2 2025.

“Addressing the losses, Xiaomi Group Partner and President Lu Weibing previously explained that the company’s automotive business is still in its early stages and hasn’t yet achieved sufficient scale. He noted that heavy initial investments and cost allocation led to early-stage losses with self-built factories and proprietary core technologies, following the pattern seen across the electric vehicle industry. Lu predicted that as delivery volumes increase, losses will continue to narrow as economies of scale become more apparent,” CarNewsChina summarized. They also indicated that net operating profits could be coming in Q2.

The Coming Xiaomi YU7

More good news: the company’s next EV model, the YU7, has even more demand than the SU7 had before launch. “As of May 25, the number of users providing contact information after the ‘YU7 Technology Launch Event’ was approximately three times higher than for the SU7’s launch event during the same period,” CarNewsChina shares. Consider it something like the Tesla Model Y compared to the Tesla Model 3.

The YU7 is coming in July. It will have a starting price of 245,900 yuan ($34,130). The current Tesla Model Y starts at 263,500 yuan ($36,575).

Four Beautiful Xiaomi SU7s … Crash

Lastly, it’s unfortunate to note that four units of the Xiaomi SU7 were involved in a crash this week. They were part of a wedding party — it’s apparently popular to used the SU7 for wedding parties because of how cool they are and their attractive variety of color options. Unfortunately, in the wedding party in Hefei, Anhui Province, the car at the front of the convoy braked quickly, leading to the one behind it crashing into the back, and the one behind that crashing into it, and the one behind that one crashing into it.

Now, the question here as far as a broader point is whether the emergency braking feature in the car is inadequate. That’s a possibility. However, it’s presumed that the cars were just traveling too closely, and it’s been advised that wedding parties using convoys of cars like this don’t have them following so closely. That seems like smart advice in general, not just for wedding parties using the Xiaomi SU7 in China.
