HPE and STRACON Tech adding AI to their strategic alliance

In a context where mining demands real-time decision-making, greater operational efficiency, and increasingly robust predictive models, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and STRACON Tech say they are strengthening an existing strategic alliance to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence in the mining industry. STRACON Tech is the technology arm of leading mining contractor, STRACON.

Through HPE Private Cloud AI, powered by NVIDIA and delivered through the HPE GreenLake model, HPE provides an enterprise AI platform that enables the development, training, and deployment of models directly where data is generated, within a secure on-premise environment.

STRACON Tech says it complements these capabilities with its operational mining expertise and deep understanding of mine and plant processes, ensuring solutions aligned with the business’s critical KPIs.
This collaboration “brings together world-class technology and practical operational knowledge, transforming data into intelligent decisions and enabling safer, more autonomous, and more efficient operations.”

STRACON as a leading mining contractor has already navigated some of the largest digitalisation projects in mining – including in 2023 commissioning the Quellaveco copper operation, Peru’s first digital mine, in collaboration with Anglo American. This included the implementation and operation of a fleet of autonomous Caterpillar 794 AC ultra-class mining trucks utilising Cat Command for hauling to enhance the safety of people, generate higher productivity, and benefit the environment by promoting efficiency.

STRACON Tech deployed its Proximity Detection System, which uses Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology, at Quellaveco – described as an intelligent and effective system notable for its accessibility and easy installation, allowing its use on people, mining vehicles and various objects.

Other notable projects include an automatic barrier system to control the regulated crossing of autonomous mining trucks for the Collahuasi copper mine in Chile, which uses an autonomous Komatsu 930E fleet. The solution is mechanised and automatically controlled, and is activated by a detection algorithm that identifies the circulation of autonomous mining trucks near the vehicle crossing. These barriers always remain closed and are raised after validating the absence of vehicles on the route and upon request for opening by the driver of the vehicle wishing to cross the path.
