Last night, I wrote about how Ford and Nissan EV sales collapsed in the US in 2025. Tesla sales also weren’t good, and the overall US EV market is clearly down following the ending if the $7,500 US EV tax credit. So, I was quite surprised to see that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 actually rocked it in the first quarter!
IONIQ 5 deliveries totaled 4,425 in March, up from 3,919 in March 2025. That’s a 13% increase. Across the first three months of the year, the IONIQ 5 had 9,790 sales, up 14% from the 8,611 sales of Q1 2025. Look at that — an EV that had increased sales!
Then IONIQ 6, which is being discontinued in the US, didn’t have such a good time. It’s sales decreased from 1,435 in March 2026 to 256 in March 2025, an 82% drop. Across the quarter, its sales dropped from 3,318 in 2025 to 829 this year, a 75% drop.
So, it’s not all roses and cotton candy for Hyundai, but the IONIQ 5 is holding down the fort well.
Also, as another plus, the IONIQ 9 had 905 sales in March — none last March — and had 1,990 across the first quarter — compared to none last year.
So, we have to look at Hyundai for some bright spots in the US EV market in 2026. Hopefully it can build on the first quarter and have a strong rest of the year.
Hyundai also had a few other EV highlights to mention:
- Hyundai Leads 2026 Best Cars for Families Awards: Hyundai led the 2026 Best Cars for Families list with five models recognized, including the Palisade Hybrid, IONIQ 5, IONIQ 9, Tucson, and Tucson Hybrid, underscoring strong marks for safety, reliability, space and family-focused features.
- Hyundai Earns Seven 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK Awards from IIHS: Hyundai received six TOP SAFETY PICK+ and one TOP SAFETY PICK award from IIHS as testing standards tightened, spotlighting recognized models such as IONIQ 5, IONIQ 9, Sonata, Kona, Tucson, Santa Fe (TSP+), and Elantra (TSP).
- Uber and Motional Launch Robotaxi Service in Las Vegas: Uber and Motional (majority owned by Hyundai Motor Group) announced riders in Las Vegas can now be matched with an all-electric Motional IONIQ 5 robotaxi, launching along key Las Vegas Boulevard locations with plans to expand the service area over time.
- IONNA Celebrates Second Anniversary: IONNA, the EV charging joint venture formed by eight automakers, marked its second anniversary by highlighting that, in two years, it has built a live, expanding road‑trip-ready charging network serving drivers nationwide.
