Marking a transformative chapter in India’s resource strategy, Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, unveiled the Copper Vision Document 2047 at the International Conference on Sustainable & Responsible Mining held in Hyderabad. This comprehensive document outlines India’s strategic roadmap to address a projected sixfold increase in copper demand by the year 2047 — a cornerstone year for India’s aspirations of becoming a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
The Copper Imperative for a Developed India
Copper, often called the “metal of electrification,” is pivotal to the green energy transition, electric vehicles (EVs), smart grids, and industrial innovation. India’s current per capita copper consumption is significantly lower than that of developed nations. However, with rapid urbanization, digitalization, and energy diversification, copper demand is expected to rise from around 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to over 6 MTPA by 2047.
The Copper Vision Document 2047 is a forward-looking blueprint that sets measurable goals and defines key policy frameworks to unlock India’s domestic copper potential while minimizing import dependency.
Key Pillars of the Copper Vision Document
-
Expansion of Refined Copper Capacity:
-
Targets a substantial increase in domestic copper refining capacity, aiming to close the demand-supply gap.
-
Encourages new greenfield investments and revival of existing assets through public-private partnerships.
-
-
Enhancing Copper Recycling:
-
Focuses on building a robust copper recycling ecosystem to supplement primary production.
-
Introduces incentives for formal scrap collection and recycling technologies aligned with circular economy principles.
-
-
Securing Global Strategic Partnerships:
-
Proposes partnerships with resource-rich nations to ensure supply chain resilience.
-
Advocates overseas acquisitions and long-term supply contracts for copper concentrates.
-
-
Sustainable and Responsible Mining Practices:
-
Prioritizes environmentally sustainable extraction methods, local community engagement, and technological innovation.
-
Envisions a regulatory environment conducive to faster clearances, ESG compliance, and exploration transparency.
-
-
Research, Development, and Innovation:
-
Encourages R&D in new-age copper alloys, advanced refining methods, and cleaner metallurgical technologies.
-
Promotes academia-industry collaboration for skill development and process modernization.
-
