This story came two months and a half late. It was buried under the many stories propped up in the content management system. But the article remains relevant. I adjusted the tone and the tenses to catch up.
The hype surrounding Jakarta’s transit transition was already building well before the doors opened at the Jakarta International Expo in Kemayoran. Early commitments from local officials pointed to a turning point: getting Indonesian-built battery-electric buses out of the testing phase and onto the high-capacity corridors of Transjakarta. By the time Busworld Southeast Asia wrapped up, that promise had turned into a tangible working model, cementing Indonesia’s position at the front of the region’s commercial EV shift.
Towards the end of 2025 Transjakarta integrated an initial batch of 15 locally built electric buses into active service. Instead of shipping fully built units directly from Chinese factories, these vehicles came out of a partnership between local coachbuilder Karoseri Laksana and VKTR, the EV subsidiary of Bakrie & Brothers. That started a momentum picked up traction in early 2026.
Built on a BYD chassis, Laksana put together the e-Cityline 3 bodies at its plant in Ungaran, Central Java. Operated by state-owned transit firm DAMRI, these low-floor and high-floor hybrid entry buses gave operators the operational data needed to prove the concept works under Jakarta’s demanding daily transit schedules.
The unique Southeast Asian bus manufacturing ecosystem under the spotlight. Unlike North American or European markets where operators typically buy turnkey vehicles from a single brand, bus procurement in Indonesia relies heavily on specialized bodybuilders to construct custom shells on imported or locally supplied chassis. That setup was front and center as the show drew over 5,000 attendees from 41 countries, featuring 25 zero-emission and low-emission commercial vehicles across 8,000 square meters of floor space.
Domestic bodybuilders used the trade show floor to prove they can match international engineering standards. PT Tentrem Sejahtera took home top design honors for its E-Velocity W1, showing off an aerodynamic, locally styled body structure designed specifically for high-capacity urban transit routes.
Popularity of zero-emission heavy transit is also spilling over into commercial charter and sports transport. Laksana rolled out its Legacy SR3 Neo Panorama electric intercity coach, constructed on Hyundai’s Elec City chassis platform. The unit is set to serve as the official team bus for local soccer club Persija Jakarta, marking the first time a professional sports team in Indonesia has adopted a fully electric team coach. It shows that commercial fleet electrification in Southeast Asia is expanding beyond municipal transit subsidies into high-profile private and charter applications.
At the same time, global vehicle makers are altering their local sales strategies to stay relevant in the region. Xiamen Golden Dragon Bus Co. brought a 12-meter electric transit bus (codenamed XML6125JEVJC3) alongside a smaller urban passenger van, earning top spectator honors for its MAX model. More importantly, the Chinese manufacturer confirmed plans to introduce a range-extended electric bus platform tailored for Indonesia’s long-haul highway corridors and inter-island ferry routes. The move builds on its existing supply contracts delivering battery-electric units to Transjakarta.
European manufacturers are also maneuvering for market share as the regional supply chain shifts toward electric drive. German commercial vehicle maker MAN Truck & Bus made its official Busworld Southeast Asia debut alongside local distributor PT Millennium Inframach Distribusi Indonesia. MAN brought its three-axle Lion’s Chassis CO platform to Jakarta, kicking off technical discussions with local bodybuilders to adapt the premium chassis layout for future localized electric and low-emission body builds.
This expansion of domestic bodybuilding capability gives the Jakarta provincial government the industrial backing it needs to push its zero-emission targets forward. The momentum picked up further in mid-July when ecosystem provider INVI and KALISTA Group signed direct agreements with three major Transjakarta operators—Pahala Kencana, Bayu Holong, and Kopang ARH. Utilizing a Fleet-as-a-Service approach, the consortium is deploying 12-meter HIGER electric high-deckers to tackle the financial and infrastructure bottlenecks of scaling up.

City officials want the entire Transjakarta network running purely on electric power by 2030. Considering that the system moves over 1 million passengers every single day, successful execution in Jakarta creates an operational blueprint that neighboring ASEAN transit authorities are watching closely.
Moving from complete vehicle imports to local assembly is also changing the labor landscape inside Indonesian assembly plants. Reports from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy note that localizing electric bus production opens up new technical job opportunities across the manufacturing and maintenance sectors.
Beyond municipal borders, INVI is expanding e-bus deployments to West Kalimantan and launching the INVI Technician Academy to train specialized mechanics. Meanwhile, organizations like the Transjakarta Academy are using the rollout of new high-voltage equipment and standardized charging infrastructure to train more female technicians and drivers, bringing better balance to an industry serving a commuter base where women account for roughly 60% of daily ridership.
