Japan, US Exploring Rare Earth Mining Near Minamitori in Pacific, Says PM Takaichi

Japan and the United States are considering a joint initiative to begin rare earth mining near Minamitori Island in the Pacific Ocean, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed on Tuesday. The move is part of a broader strategic effort to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals essential for high-tech manufacturing, defense systems, and green energy technologies.

Speaking at a press briefing in Tokyo, PM Takaichi said both countries are in advanced discussions about surveying the seabed around Minamitori — a remote Japanese territory known for its substantial rare earth deposits. Initial studies suggest the area contains high concentrations of vital minerals such as yttrium, terbium, and dysprosium, which are crucial for producing semiconductors, EV motors, and advanced batteries.

“This collaboration marks a significant step toward ensuring a stable supply chain for critical materials,” Takaichi stated. She emphasized that securing alternative rare earth sources is a national priority for Japan amid growing global competition.

The United States has shown strong interest in partnering on the project as part of its own efforts to diversify supply chains and reduce reliance on Beijing, which currently controls more than 70% of the world’s rare earth processing.

Experts say the potential project could reshape the geopolitical landscape of mineral supply lines in the Indo-Pacific. However, deep-sea mining has raised environmental concerns, with activists urging caution due to the possible impact on marine ecosystems.

Both nations plan to conduct extensive environmental assessments before approving extraction. Further details about investment, timelines, and operational frameworks are expected to emerge after joint feasibility studies are completed later this year.

If successful, the initiative could become a landmark collaboration in the race for critical mineral independence and reinforce Japan–US strategic ties in the Pacific.
