Key Knowledge Documents Launched at 2nd North-East Mining Ministers’ Conclave to Drive Mineral Development

The newly released documents include:

  • Comprehensive reports on mineral exploration and mining in the North-East

  • Assessments of coal resources and potential for commercial coal mining

  • District Resource Maps of all eight North-Eastern states

These publications are designed to serve as foundational tools for evidence-based policymaking, investment planning, and scientific resource utilization across the mineral-rich but underexplored North-Eastern corridor.

Strategic Significance for the Region

The North-East region holds vast untapped potential in minerals such as coal, limestone, and rare earth elements. However, terrain challenges, ecological sensitivity, and infrastructure limitations have historically hindered full-scale exploration.

By providing detailed geological, topographical, and socio-economic data:

  • The documents enable targeted exploration

  • Support environmentally responsible mining

  • Aid states in drafting region-specific mineral policies

  • Boost commercial viability for public and private players

Leadership Remarks

Speaking at the conclave, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy emphasized the Centre’s commitment to inclusive development:

“The North-East is not just rich in natural resources, but also in cultural heritage. Through scientific mining, we aim to transform this resource wealth into regional prosperity while upholding environmental and social responsibility.”

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the importance of central-state collaboration:

“Assam and the entire North-East stand to benefit from better infrastructure, employment, and industrial growth. These documents provide the roadmap for unlocking the region’s mining potential.”

Accelerating Sustainable Growth

The launch aligns with the Government of India’s broader strategy to:

  • Enhance domestic mineral self-reliance

  • Promote commercial coal mining in non-traditional regions

  • Empower state governments with data-backed decision tools

  • Create employment opportunities and spur economic activity in the North-East

With this release, the Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Coal have taken a critical step in building a transparent, inclusive, and growth-oriented mining ecosystem tailored to the North-East.
