Lloyds Metals & Energy Ltd (LMEL) has undertaken a groundbreaking initiative by transforming its Surjagarh Iron Ore Mine (SIOM) in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, into India’s first “green mine.” This shift reflects LMEL’s commitment to sustainable mining and low-emission operations, setting a benchmark for the Indian mining sector.
1. Massive Reduction in Carbon Emissions
The Surjagarh mine has achieved an annual CO₂ emission reduction of 32,000 tonnes through green technologies and operational changes. With further planned integrations of renewable energy, this figure is expected to rise to 50,000 tonnes per year. LMEL’s green steel philosophy drives the effort, applying decarbonization practices across all stages of mining—from drilling to logistics.
2. Deployment of Green Technologies
Electric Mining Fleet
LMEL has expanded its electric vehicle fleet from 34 to 56 vehicles, including electric compressors, drills, excavators, and loaders. By FY2026, the fleet is expected to exceed 100 vehicles, replacing traditional diesel-powered equipment.
Diesel-Free Drilling
India’s first electric compressor drill has been deployed at the mine, significantly reducing the dependency on diesel.
LNG-Hybrid Ore Transport
The company has introduced LNG-powered tip-trailers to transport ore and is working on developing a full LNG ecosystem to support clean logistics.
3. Green Logistics: India’s Fourth and Maharashtra’s First Slurry Pipeline
LMEL has constructed an 87-km-long slurry pipeline linking the Hedri grinding unit to the Konsari pellet plant. This innovation reduces transport emissions by 55% and minimizes logistics costs. Plans are underway to operate the pipeline fully on renewable energy.
4. Circular Economy Through Waste Valorization
The company is using beneficiation techniques to extract valuable iron content from Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ), which was previously considered mining waste. A 15 million tonne per annum beneficiation plant is under development to maximize ore recovery and minimize waste.
5. Afforestation and Water Rejuvenation Initiatives
Under the “Mission Green” program:
-
Over 3 lakh saplings have been planted on and around the mine site.
-
378 hectares of private land have been dedicated to compensatory afforestation—more than the 375 hectares cleared for mining.
-
Water conservation efforts have increased site capacity by 145,000 m³, with 85% of wastewater now recycled.
6. Capacity Expansion with Environmental Safeguards
The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) has approved LMEL’s proposal to increase its iron ore production capacity from 10 MTPA to 26 MTPA and process 45 MTPA of BHQ. This approval is conditional upon:
-
Maintaining forest buffers and wildlife corridors.
-
Operating at least 20% green vehicles.
-
Using only slurry pipeline for ore transport.
-
Conducting public consultations and ensuring community engagement.
7. Community Engagement and Renewable Energy Plans
LMEL has undertaken significant community development initiatives such as:
-
Job creation and green fleet training programs.
-
Infrastructure support and educational outreach.
-
Plans to source 100 MW of solar and wind energy to fully power the mine by FY2025.
