MaxMine looks to bring new level of transparency to mixed-fleet mines with FMS platform

This week, MaxMine joined a growing fleet management system (FMS) market with Pulse, a solution that combined business intelligence and AI-powered decision support to help mine operators improve productivity, reduce variability and lower cost per tonne.

With more mine operators seeking platforms that combine trusted operational data with real-time insights to improve day-to-day decision making and site performance, MaxMine’s new FMS, the company says, delivers measurable performance improvements without adding operational complexity.

IM put some questions to MaxMine CEO, Shaun Mitchell, to find out more.

IM: What makes MaxMine’s FMS different from the other solutions on the market? What technologies and solutions underpin this difference?

SM: Most fleet management systems are primarily designed to record and coordinate mining activity. MaxMine has been designed to go further by combining fleet management with mining performance improvement.

MaxMine runs a fundamentally different data platform, using rich machine data to remove the need for the extensive human data input required by traditional FMS platforms.

Our point of difference is that we do not simply tell a site what happened. We help supervisors and operational teams understand why it happened, what action they should take and whether that action delivered an improvement.

The platform brings together all-sensor machine connectivity, high-precision GPS and machine guidance, advanced analytics, AI-driven insights and operational coaching. It is underpinned by more than 14 million hours of labelled mining data and a decade of experience working directly with mine operators and contractors.

MaxMine is also vendor- and equipment-agnostic. It can operate across mixed fleets and can be deployed as a standalone FMS, alongside an existing FMS or as part of a broader performance improvement solution.

Importantly, the technology is supported by people. Our Customer Engagement team works directly with site personnel to embed improved operating practices. That combination of technology, analytics and coaching is intended to produce gains that are sustained, rather than improvements that disappear after the initial implementation.

IM: How do you see the solution competing with other non-OEM-provided FMS platforms?

SM: We see competition as healthy because mining companies increasingly want alternatives to large, closed or equipment-specific platforms.

Our strategy is not to replicate every established FMS feature and compete solely on a checklist. We are competing on ease of deployment, flexibility, mixed-fleet compatibility, quality of operational insight and the ability to convert data into measurable performance improvement.

MaxMine can provide a practical pathway for sites that are still operating with paper-based or fragmented systems and want to digitise without taking on the cost and complexity of a large enterprise implementation. It can then scale with the operation as its requirements become more sophisticated. As part of our new FMS release, we now have new packaging options which can allow our customers to mix and match capability across fleet management and mining performance to suit their current needs and budget.

For sites that already have an FMS, we do not necessarily need to replace it. MaxMine can sit alongside the incumbent system and use its data to provide deeper analytics, performance guidance and coaching. That gives customers more choice and reduces the risk of being locked into a single technology ecosystem.

We believe this flexibility is particularly valuable in the contractor and mid-tier mining markets, where speed of deployment (typically only 12 weeks), return on investment and the ability to work across different equipment brands are critical.

IM: Could you talk more about that target market? You already have a good relationship with NRW, Macmahon, etc. Are you looking at the contractor market, in particular, as a potential niche?

SM: Mining contractors are an important part of our target market.

Contractors frequently operate mixed fleets, mobilise equipment between sites and work under demanding production and cost-per-tonne targets. They need systems that can be deployed quickly, work across multiple equipment brands and provide consistent performance information across different operations.

MaxMine is well suited to that environment because it is vendor-agnostic and can provide a standard performance framework across a contractor’s portfolio, even where individual clients use different equipment or technology platforms.

Our existing relationships with major mining contractors have given us a strong understanding of those operational requirements. We see an opportunity to help contractors differentiate themselves through greater productivity, more consistent execution and stronger evidence of the value they are delivering to mine owners.

However, we do not see the contractor market as our only opportunity. We are also targeting mine owners, mid-tier operators and sites that either do not currently have an FMS or are dissatisfied with the value they are receiving from their existing system.

The initial opportunity is particularly strong across open-pit load-and-haul operations, although the platform will continue to expand into other mining activities and equipment types.

IM: Have you already secured a client for this solution? Is this on a mixed fleet of trucks?

SM: MaxMine already operates across a range of mining environments and mixed fleets, and the new FMS capability builds on technology and operational workflows that are already being used in the field.

We have a number of customers already using some or all of our current FMS technology, including Mineral Resources, Batchfire and Coronado.

The initial deployment involves a mixed fleet, which is important because vendor independence is one of the central principles behind the MaxMine platform. Mining companies and contractors should be able to select the equipment that best suits their operation without being forced into a particular OEM ecosystem.

IM: Anything else to add on the topic of FMS developments?

SM: The broader development in FMS is that the market is moving beyond basic fleet visibility.

Knowing where equipment is and recording cycle times are now baseline capabilities. The next generation of FMS platforms will need to be cloud-based, help sites make better decisions during the shift, identify emerging performance losses and give supervisors clear, prioritised actions.

We are already running AI extensively within MaxMine via our Machine Learning Ops platform, with a new application being trialled. AI will be an important part of that development, but simply adding a chatbot to an existing dashboard will not be enough. AI needs access to trusted operational data, mining-specific context and clear evidence supporting its recommendations.

That is where MaxMine has a strong foundation. We have spent 10 years developing the data, operational knowledge and customer workflows required to turn mining information into practical action.

Our objective is to make sophisticated fleet management and performance technology more accessible. A mine should be able to start with a relatively simple digitisation requirement and progressively add advanced analytics, AI insights, high-precision machine guidance and performance improvement services as its needs develop.

Ultimately, we believe the most valuable FMS will not be the system that produces the most data. It will be the one that helps a mining operation act on that data and lift performance every shift.
