Paul Fosse went to Atlanta to cover the opening of the first Mercedes-Benz charging hub in late 2023. “Mercedes-Benz is committed to investing over $1 billion in the Mercedes-Benz Charging Network,” he wrote at the time. “The network will be powered by 100% clean energy using carbon neutral renewable energy sources.” The network will use charging stations with up to 400 kW of power capacity, he added, and will be open to drivers of various brands of EVs. Naturally, Mercedes is working with partners, like ChargePoint, to actually produce these charging stations.
Jake Richardson reported last year that these Mercedes-Benz charging hubs would be installed at more than 100 Starbucks locations around the USA, and recently reported on Mercedes-Benz EV fast chargers now being installed in Texas. “Today our network is fully equipped to support CCS-1 charging and we’re in the process of adding NACS cables at every charging stall to give our customers the power of choice. Beyond this, our team has also carefully considered small but important details like cable length, to improve convenience no matter what type of vehicle you drive,” Heiko Schmidt, Vice President of Network Strategy & Monetization at Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, told him. However, the emphasis in that interview was on the expansions into Texas.
A few weeks before that article, I saw new charging stations getting installed at an outlet mall and ice rink where I routinely Supercharge. There are also Electrify America stations next to the Tesla Superchargers and across the parking lot from this new construction, so I was curious what else was getting installed there.
A week later, when I was able to get a better look, I saw that they were Mercedes-Benz EV chargers! Of course, I remembered Paul’s trip to the launch of this initiative and was happy to see the chargers in the wild.
Then, seeing the Texas news, I figured this was all part of a large rollout, or that Florida would be the next state where Mercedes-Benz would be announcing the launch of more stations. These stations are not online yet, but they are getting close.
In any case, the key news is that Mercedes-Benz is now installing these EV fast chargers around the country, so look out in your area and see if you can spot any!
