Mercedes-Benz Previews New Luxury EV In Arizona

So much for the war on EVs. Auto industry insiders have been spotting hints that the US electric vehicle market is crossing over from early adopters and well-heeled drivers into the workaday world of households looking to save money on gas. Still, the demand for a high end, luxury EV will persist, and Mercedes-Benz aims to ride the tide. The automaker has selected a dealer in the high-income city of Scottsdale, Arizona as the global showcase for details about the long-awaited 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV.

A Luxury EV For Daily Commutes

Mercedes-Benz has been pushing the electrification envelope on its GLC line for at least 10 years, and the company is particularly excited about the latest iteration. “The upcoming model year introduces a groundbreaking shift in premium electric mobility,” Mercedes-Benz explains, affirming that the information newly released by the dealer — Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale — is verified by the automaker.

Similarly, MBScottsdale did not hold back. “The upcoming electric vehicle provides exceptional engineering configurations designed to conquer unique Arizona climate challenges,” the dealer explains.

“First, a robust liquid-cooled battery thermal management loop actively shields internal cells against intense summer heat,” they elaborate. “Moreover, an advanced climate control system operates efficiently to keep passengers chilled without draining the total driving range.”

Going by the description, Mercedes-Benz aims to counter any and all skepticism regarding the ability of EVs to compete against gasmobiles on performance in Arizona, with a particular emphasis on the potential to outperform gasmobiles for daily commutes in congested urban traffic.

“Because valley traffic often requires unexpected stops, regenerative braking hardware continuously recaptures energy to power the vehicle’s grid. As a result, daily travel through town becomes highly cost-effective and completely stress-free,” the dealer notes.

What About The Specs?

In a press statement posted earlier today,  MBScottsdale also provided a glimpse into the technology underlying the forthcoming EV, with an emphasis on “historic automotive innovations that optimize your personal driving experience.”

Topping the dealer’s list is a new 39.1-inch multimedia screen that integrates navigation, instrumentation and entertainment. That’s not particularly of interest to drivers who prefer a stripped-down experience, but it does meet the more-is-better expectations of luxury EV buyers.

Numbers two and three on the list are next-gen computing hardware to processes safety hazards, and a “Hyperscreen” that expands the dashboard layout.

Again, somewhat ho-hum considering the advanced state of EV safety and screen technology, but that could reflect the dealer’s awareness of priorities that draw car buyers to the luxury EV market.

The specs for items 4-6 focus more attention on performance factors, particularly in tight urban environments:

Advanced 4.5-degree rear-axle steering that dramatically sharpens tight parking maneuvers.

Available 4MATIC® all-wheel drive that delivers confident traction across changing desert road conditions.

Rapid DC fast-charging capabilities that replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes.

MBScottsdale further notes that the new technologies combine to provide “an incredibly quiet ride through heavy metropolitan traffic,” again emphasizing the appeal of a luxury EV for city drivers, at least in cities where the streets are generously wide.

Closing out the list is #7, in which MBScottsdale draws attention to the vehicle’s ability to perform in more scenic areas of the Arizona, highlighting “exceptional driving range to support long weekend excursions across the state.”

Whatever Happened To The War On EVs?

Partisan politics aside, the performance factor is Mercedes Benz’s meat-and-potatoes, and advanced electrification technology provides the company with an opportunity to outshine gasmobiles on multiple levels.

“Our clients demand the absolute peak of automotive sophistication combined with sustainable performance,” explains MBScottsdale spokesperson Matt McDermott.

“Therefore, the arrival of the 2027 electric Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV represents a monumental shift for premium transportation in our region. This intelligent machine learns your personal habits to optimize every single trip,” McDermott adds.

Battery and Power Architecture: A 94 kWh lithium-ion battery capacity delivers a potent 483 horsepower via a permanently excited synchronous motor design.

Charging Velocity: Exceptional 330 kW DC fast charging capabilities replenish up to 188 miles of driving range in just 10 minutes.

Estimated Driving Range: Preliminary estimates indicate over 400 miles of driving range based on the European cycle standard.

Dynamic Agility: An advanced electric drive unit features a high-efficiency two-speed transmission and 4.5-degree rear-axle steering.

Voluminous Utility: Expanded cargo capacity provides 4.5 cubic feet in the front trunk alongside up to 61.4 cubic feet of rear space.

What About The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT XX?

Aside from utilitarian purposes, the luxury EV market also encompasses sporty little runabouts for auto enthusiasts, and Mercedes-Benz has those bases covered as well. Last year the company described the Concept AMG GT XX, a four-door concept EV envisioned by its AMG branch.

Among other next-generation EV technologies, the concept EV featured new axial flux motors, described by Mercedes-Benz as “significantly more compact, lighter and, above all, more powerful than conventional electric motors (radial flux motors).”

“The power density of axial flux motors is around three times that of conventional electric motors. At the same time, the innovative motors are around two-thirds lighter and are just one third of the size,” the automaker added.

The axial flux angle surfaced in an announcement dated June 30 of 2025, in which Mercedes-Benz also anticipated series production of the new motors at its AMG branch this year.

Sure enough, the automotive press lit up earlier this week with news that series production of the new motor is under way at the company’s Berlin-Marienfelde factory, on track to debut in the Mercedes-AMG GT.

Beyond passenger cars, earlier today the company also broke news that series production of its new VLE electric van has begun at its facility in Vittoria, Spain, with the aim of mining the luxury EV market in the that sector as well.

“The VLE is the first vehicle based on the specially developed, modular and drivetrain-flexible Van Architecture, and marks the beginning of a new era of Grand Limousines,” the company notes.

Covering all the bases, Mercedes-Benz is also pitching the new VLE as a family car as well as a commercial vehicle. “As a Grand Limousine, the new VLE is a perfect companion for a wide range of use cases – from a flexible vehicle for families and leisure-oriented customers to exclusive shuttle services,” the company explains.

No word yet on whether or note the VLE is heading to the US market. So far the initial market is Europe, to be followed by China next year.
