Michelin launches new OTR tyre for wheel loaders

Michelin has launched a new tyre designed specifically to, it says, deliver the high-performance required by the latest generation of powerful mine and quarry wheel loaders.

The MICHELIN Xtra Power L5** 26.5 R25 combines robustness and productivity in extreme and demanding conditions, while optimising operator comfort.

Following the release of the initial version of the MICHELIN Xtra Power L5*** 35/65 R33 in 2021, this new size complements Michelin’s tyre offerings for loaders.

Clifford de Jager, CES Technical Manager, Beyond Road – Mining, Construction, Material Handling at Michelin, says: “At Michelin, we are always adapting and developing our products to ensure they match the needs of the latest machinery on the market. The MICHELIN Xtra Power L5** 26.5 R25 can handle the most challenging working environments, while delivering optimised load capacity and improved torque transmission in a stable, comfortable and safe manner.”

Designed for complex applications, it meets various needs: face work, block handling and operations subjecting the tyre to extreme stresses and high working speeds.

Acknowledging the new generation of larger vehicles with high-capacity buckets, the MICHELIN Xtra Power L5** 26.5 R25 allows for a load capacity increase of up to 18.5 t, 23% more than the previous generation, according to the company.

Michelin engineers have developed an innovative structure for this new tyre size, the company explains. It features a curved design and improved support of the rubber blocks that reduce stress on the contact surface and maximise protection. The tread and shoulders of the tyre have been reinforced for added protection against damage. Torque transmission is improved by the larger bead heel.

Thanks to its new tread design and unique rubber compound, the MICHELIN Xtra Power L5** 26.5 R25 possesses improved robustness, Michelin claims. It withstands abrasive soils and aggressive surfaces, and facilitates movement on varied terrains such as stones, debris and rock, thereby enhancing machine productivity. These innovations also contribute to reducing the risk of rim slip due to the larger bead heel preventing premature wear.

Designed to be retreadable, the MICHELIN Xtra Power L5** 26.5 R25 allows fleet managers to optimise its use, as well as operational costs in the long term. The comfort and safety of users is a priority for Michelin in the design of its products, with this new size able to be used up to 7.5 bars, improving the stability of machines by 20% and further enhancing operator comfort, even during intensive loading cycles, it added.
