Ministry of Defence Proposes ‘Bank of Metals’ to Secure India’s Long-Term Strategic Needs

In a significant move to reduce import dependence and ensure a steady supply of critical metals for defence and aerospace applications, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has directed Yantra India Limited (YIL) to establish a dedicated ‘Bank of Metals’. The initiative aims to secure long-term availability of high-grade aluminium alloys and other strategic materials essential for military manufacturing.

The proposed plan includes setting up a 10,000-tonne capacity metal forging press, which will enable India to produce advanced alloys domestically for use in missile systems, aircraft, and naval platforms. The project is expected to enhance self-reliance under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission, while strengthening the country’s defence supply chain.

The “Bank of Metals” will act as a centralized repository and reserve of key metals, ensuring that critical defence projects are not disrupted by global supply fluctuations or export restrictions. It will also support the private and public sector defence manufacturers that depend heavily on imported high-strength materials.

Officials from the MoD emphasized that this initiative aligns with India’s growing focus on indigenous production, innovation, and strategic resource management. Once operational, the facility will not only reduce costs but also position India as a regional hub for advanced defence metallurgy.
