NCL Partners with CMPDI to Advance Solar Power Projects, Boosting Coal India’s Clean Energy and Net-Zero Mining Mission

Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) to accelerate the implementation of solar power projects across its mining operations. The collaboration marks a significant step toward Coal India Limited’s (CIL) broader clean energy transition and long-term target of achieving net-zero mining emissions.

The agreement focuses on the development and deployment of large-scale solar installations at various NCL sites, aimed at reducing dependence on conventional power sources and cutting carbon emissions generated during coal production. CMPDI will provide technical consultancy, project planning, and monitoring support for the solar ventures, ensuring efficient execution from design to commissioning.

NCL officials stated that the initiative aligns with Coal India’s sustainability roadmap, which prioritizes renewable energy adoption and energy-efficient mining technologies. The solar projects are expected to generate substantial clean power, which will be used to run mining equipment, reduce operational costs, and improve the environmental footprint of coal extraction.

Industry experts see the partnership as a forward-looking step, reflecting the growing emphasis on decarbonization within India’s mining sector. With global pressure mounting on coal producers to lower emissions, CIL’s subsidiaries are increasingly investing in green infrastructure and renewable energy capacity.

The solar rollout is part of Coal India’s plan to install over 3,000 MW of renewable capacity in the coming years, with NCL playing a pivotal role in the transition. Officials confirmed that preliminary site assessments have already begun, and project execution will be fast-tracked to meet clean energy targets.

The initiative is expected to enhance operational sustainability, generate employment in the renewable energy sector, and set a benchmark for environmentally responsible mining practices across the country.
