Powering the Future: FQM Cultivates Zambia’s Next Generation of Mining Leaders

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) is actively working to bridge the gap between academia and industry in Zambia through an immersive educational initiative. As part of its long-term commitment to building a future-ready workforce, the company recently hosted students and lecturers from three of the country’s top higher learning institutions. This initiative, which provides students with hands-on experience and mentorship, is a cornerstone of FQM’s People First strategy.

Bridging Theory and Practice

Students and lecturers from the University of Zambia (UNZA), Copperbelt University (CBU), and Northern Technical College (NORTEC) were invited to FQM’s Trident Mining site in Kalumbila. During the visit, the students, who are pursuing studies in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Heavy Equipment Repair, were given an exclusive tour of the facility. They explored critical operational areas, including the Sentinel and Enterprise mines, the Mobile Equipment Maintenance workshop, and the high-tech Dispatch Control Centre. This direct exposure to cutting-edge technology and large-scale operations allowed them to see the practical application of the theories they learn in their classrooms.

Ritesh Mishra, Trident’s Mining Operations Manager, highlighted the strategic importance of such engagements. He explained that these initiatives are more than just a good practice; they represent a vital investment in the next generation of engineers, technicians, and innovators. By providing direct access to its operations, FQM is helping to shape the future of responsible mining in Zambia.

Mentorship and Career Pathways

The site visit culminated in mentorship-style networking sessions, where students engaged directly with FQM professionals from various departments, including mining, processing, and human resources. These sessions provided invaluable insights into potential career paths, emerging industry trends, and the increasing role of technology in modern mining.
