Przyjazn Coking Plant launches state-of-the-art coke oven battery

On 12 May the ceremonial firing up of the ceramic block of the newly-built Coke Oven Battery No. 4 took place at the Przyjazn Coking Plant owned by JSW KOKS SA (JSW Group).

The event marks the transition to the final stage of the project – filling the battery chambers with coal and starting coke production.

The new battery will increase the plant’s production capacity and set new technological, environmental and efficiency standards across Europe. The event was attended by, among others, MPs, representatives of the authorities of the Silesian province, the mayor of Dabrowa Górnicza, local government officials, project contractors and the management boards of JSW SA and JSW KOKS.

Battery No. 4 is currently the most modern facility of its kind on the Old Continent. Its annual coke production capacity will be approximately 610 000 t. The project was carried out using a number of innovative technological solutions, thanks to which the new battery will operate with higher efficiency, lower consumption of raw materials, and significantly reduced environmental impact.

The battery has, among other things, a completely redesigned ceramic block, whose new design allows the coking process to be carried out in a more energy-efficient manner. The precursor systems for gas discharge from coke oven chambers make it possible to meet the strictest environmental standards and BAT (Best Available Techniques) requirements. Also of particular note is the use of a huge charging machine – charging larry weighing about 1200 t – and a completely innovative, never-before-seen combination of a stamp charging system and a dry coke quenching plant. This technological configuration allows the production of coke with the highest quality parameters, while using a cheaper raw material base.

Jerzy Wolinski, President of the JSW KOKS SA Management Board:

“The commissioning of the battery is a landmark moment not only for JSW KOKS. It confirms that we are successfully implementing ambitious development plans by focusing on modern, efficient and responsible technologies. We are proud to not only produce more, but also to produce responsibly – with concern for air quality and the health of the region’s residents. This is the result of the hard work of many people. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the execution of this project.”

Ryszard Janta, President of the JSW SA Management Board, said:

“The new project is an important element of the JSW Group’s development strategy, which responds to both growing environmental requirements and market challenges related to global competition. Battery No. 4 is proof that heavy industry can modernize and increase its efficiency while reducing its carbon footprint and climate impact. The commissioning of Battery No. 4 is symbolic confirmation that the Polish coking industry is not only keeping up with global trends, but is also capable of setting them.”
